3 Reasons To Use Roofers for an Inspection After Major Storms

November 6, 2023

While you stay dry and protected in your home during a major storm, the roof that hangs above you will take a lot on a lot of the damage and direct impact that a storm can create. Along with rains and high winds, a lot of damage can occur during a hailstorm. While you could do a quick visual inspection from the ground, you don't want to take any chances with your roof.

A professional roofer can help with an inspection after a major storm. Learn exactly what they will look for and ways to help ensure your roof remains strong and protected for the long haul.

1. Gutter Clogs and Damage

A major hailstorm could do some damage to your gutters. A properly installed gutter system will cause water to flow away from your roof and drain away from the home. However, the high winds and impact of large hail could cause gutters to shift, move, or disconnect. A rooftop inspection will include a gutter inspection and help prevent any major issues.

The inspection will also include a check for clogged gutters. If a hailstorm has high winds, debris like sticks and leaves could easily enter the gutters and create issues. During an inspection, a roofer may remove some of the bigger clogs to ensure the gutters remain cleared out for future storms.

2. Caulking and Roof Leaks

Hailstorms and windstorms can cause a lot of damage to a roof. The last thing you want to deal with is water leaks in the home. A roofer understands the layout of a roof and will have the ability to inspect different areas.

In these areas, the leaks may not appear right away inside your home, but they can build up over time and quickly introduce elements like mildew and mold. Doing an inspection early on will ensure you repair any potential leaks and help keep excess moisture out of the home. The inspection will highlight some of the small areas and crevices that are hard to see from the ground.

In some cases, a roofer may do an inspection inside an attic area to determine any signs of leaks like water spots. The indoor inspection can help them pinpoint some of the areas where the exterior needs inspection.

3. Shingle Quality and Inspection

One of the more vulnerable areas of a roof during a major storm is the shingles. Layers of shingles can offer a lot of protection, but high winds and hard hail could easily cause damage to even the strongest shingles. A roofing inspection will include a complete overview of the shingles on your roof.

The shingle inspection will include checks to see if the shingles have bruised or loosened in any way. Instead of replacing the whole roof, a roofer can complete quick repairs or shingle replacements to ensure the roof remains in good condition and further deterioration doesn't occur.

If some shingles have completely fallen off or become displaced, then the inspection will include checks of the boards underneath. If boards have become soaked or damaged in any way, then a roofer can also complete those repairs to ensure your home remains leak-free.
